The book introduces the first magical character who is instrumental in helping Alexander out of the trouble and returning him safely home. However all is not quite as it seems. In looking for his favorite toy he managed to get cold, wet, and rip his clothes. Alexander returns home safely, however the caterpillar had not helped fix his Alexander's clothes. Alexander is elated to be home but when his mother finds out that he has ripped and dirtied his clothes Alexander is in trouble again ….
