I gasp and instinctively bring my fist to my chest, wanting my heart to slow down. Serena looks at me with concern. “Are you OK, Johane? You look like you have seen a ghost.”I feel the blood drain from my face. My mouth feels dry. And I couldn’t utter a single sound even if my life depended on it. I feel like running away but my legs are like jelly. I can only stare at the tall figure advancing swiftly toward us. “What is he doing here?” I finally moan, unaware that I uttered those words out loud. Serena follows my eyes. Liz and her husband were walking towards us with a man who looks all too familiar. Serena only has time to whisper, “Do you know him?” before the trio stops in front of us. “Hello, Johane,” Edouard whispers in a low, deep voice. He bends down to kiss me on the cheeks with a hint of a smile on his lips. All eyes are on us. My face is burning. I hate him for looking so relaxed when my world just turned upside down. And it sure doesn’t help that he smells so good. Serena gives a small cough. “Sorry,” I mumble, praying that no one could hear the weird cracking sound coming from my trembling legs. Control yourself girl, I silently scold myself.“Serena, please meet Dr. Edouard Leroy. Edouard, my cousin Serena,” I say, thankful that I managed to keep my voice more or less stable. I didn’t want anyone to be aware of the turmoil inside me, especially Edouard. I am hoping that Serena won’t insist that I qualify my relationship with Edouard. Wishful thinking.“So where did you guys meet?” she asks eagerly, her eyes darting from Edouard to me and back. I quickly look up to Edouard with a warning in my eyes, keep your mouth shut or else. But he only looks amused. I wish I could erase that cocky smile from his lips. He is obviously enjoying making me feel uncomfortable. He is so exasperating! But, keeping my calm, I turn to Serena, looking for a way to ignore her question. Luckily at that moment Boulou comes running to his mom.
