The Appenzeller Sennenhunde is a medium-size breed of dog. It is one of the four regional breeds of Sennenhunde-type dogs that originate from the Swiss Alps. The name 'Sennenhunde' comes from the Swiss word 'Senn' which refers to the herders from the Appenzell region in Switzerland. The breed was originally developed to be both a cattle herding dog and a flock guardian. The breed is extremely loyal and has been to known to give their own lives to protect their herd! The breed has a heavy and athletic build and a distinctive tri-colored coat. They have small triangular ears which are set high on the face.
