It's 1966 and the Vietnam War, Civil Rights, and Women's Liberation are in the forefront of the news. Sandy graduates college and leaves Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to escape a traditional path of graduate school, marriage and motherhood. Once she boards the Cunard's Queen Elizabeth alone for a transatlantic voyage to France, her adventurous spirit is unleashed. Sandy and her best friend Susan arrange to meet in Paris where they explore the cafe scene, French culture, and Turkish toilets (squat toilets). As a waitress in a cafe, she is forced to contend with the daily sexual advances of a customer causing her to leave Paris with Susan and hitchhike across Europe. As we follow their travels through France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy, they lead us on exciting and risky exploits with no regard for consequences. It all comes to an abrupt end in Rome where they find themselves homeless and penniless until Sandy meets Gianni and falls hopelessly in love.
